Hannover Airport - All Information on Hannover Airport (HAJ)

Hannover Airport is located in the town of Langenhagen, north of Hannover in the German state of Lower Saxony. The airport is also known as the Hannover-Langenhagen Airport or Langenhagen Airport.

The airport is the ninth largest airport in Germany and it serves as a base for Condor, Corendon Airlines Europe, Eurowings and TUI fly Deutschland. The airport’s IATA code is HAJ and the ICAO code is EDDV.

Hannover Airport was opened in 1952 when it replaced an old airfield within Hannover city limits. The new airport was placed in Langenhagen, 11 km/6.8 mi north of Hannover.

Two modern terminals were opened in 1973, made famous due to their compact design, and they later became the archetype for Sheremetyevo International Airport outside of Moscow, Russia. The terminals are what today are named Terminals A and B.

Terminal C, the largest of the terminals, was opened in 1998.

The three passenger terminals are all interconnected on land side, but are separated on air side. They have a total of 20 gates and each terminal has additional bus gates. Terminal A and B have 6 gates each and Terminal C, being the largest one, has 8.

All of the three passenger terminals have the capacity to handle a Boeing 747 aircraft.

The fourth terminal, Terminal D, is located east of the main terminal building and is a rebuilt hangar exclusively used by the Royal Air Force to transport British troops to and from Northern Germany.

The airport hosted the Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung, the largest airshow in Germany, between 1957 and 1990, but it was relocated to Berlin in 1992 after a fatal accident in 1988 when a Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter hit a Jetway with its rotor.

Hannover Airport has three runways, two are concrete and one is asphalt. The two concrete runways are 3,800 m/12,467 ft and 2,340 m/7,677 ft respectively and the asphalt runway is 780 m/2,559 ft long.

In 2018 the airport saw 6,324,634 passengers pass through it.

The airport services flights to both metropolitan cities, such as Amsterdam, London, Barcelona, Moscow, and places of leisure, such as Gran Canaria, Antalya, Fuerteventura, within Europe, of which some flights are regular all-year-round flights and some are seasonal flights. Some flights are regular scheduled flights and others are charter flights.
